TMJ

What is TMJ?

Temproralmandibular joint disorder is the collective term for a number of issues that can arise with the muscles and joint of the jaw. TMJ has a variety of causes:

  • Whiplash
  • Grinding
  • Movement of the joint cartilage
  • Arthritis
  • Stress

TMJ typically manifests itself as severe pain or discomfort that can be temporary or last for a number of years. It can affect either or both sides of the face and symptoms usually include the following:

  • Swelling
  • Discomfort
  • Pain or tenderness in the face
  • Lockjaw
  • Tiredness in the face

Treatments for TMJ

As TMJ is the name for a complex of conditions and not a single problem, there are a number of different treatments for sufferers of TMJ. Acrylic splints or bite plates are often used to correct chewing or bite alignment. Anthrocentisis involves the flushing out of the joint area to remove debris that may have accumulated from the breakdown of the joint and improve lubrication. Injections of sodium hyaluronate can also help improve joint mobility.

Cost of TMJ Treatment

The price of TMJ treatment depends on what course of treatment is undertaken, how severe the condition is, who your practitioner is, and where you live. Some TMJ treatments can last several years and may require different doctors, dentists, and surgeons to complete.
